Class II Biological Safety Cabinet Type B2

The biosafety cabinet class IIB2 basically has the same function as the Class IIA2.   However, the Class IIB2 is more intended for toxicology applications. As such airflow through a Class IIB2 BSC is 100% externally expelled and that there is no recirculation within the BSC.  The amount of air volume used in a Class IIB2 is significantly greater than that of the Class IIA2. The Class IIB2 provides additional protection to the user when working with vapors and gases where aseptic conditions are required. All air in the BSC is expelled and not recirculated in the system.

Excellent in removing vapors and gases. Suitable in applications that involve a large amount.

Ejects approximately 2.5 times the volume of air as compared to the Class IIA2 of the same size. Likewise, a more conditioned supply of air is required to replace the greater volume of dissipated air. As a result, energy usage is naturally higher as well.

·An inclined slide shutter is utilized to improve ease of use; making operation both motion-saving and space-saving as well.

·Display monitor shows both the inflow air velocity as well as the supply air velocity in a format that is very easy to understand.

Faqs:

What is a Biosafety Cabinet (BSC)?

A Biosafety Cabinet is an enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspace designed to protect the user, the environment, and the research materials from exposure to biohazards and contamination. It uses HEPA-filtered air to create a sterile environment inside the cabinet.

What are the different types of Biosafety Cabinets?

How does a Class II Biosafety Cabinet work?

A Class II BSC filters air through HEPA filters to ensure sterile conditions inside. Air is drawn through a front grille to maintain containment, while a portion of air is recirculated through the cabinet, and some is exhausted. This protects both the user and the samples.

When should a Biosafety Cabinet be used?

BSCs are used when working with infectious agents, toxins, or other biohazards to ensure containment and protection. It’s essential when handling potentially infectious materials or procedures that may generate aerosols.

How is a Biosafety Cabinet different from a Fume Hood?

While both provide protection, BSCs are specifically designed for biological work and provide HEPA-filtered air to protect samples from contamination. In contrast, fume hoods protect the user from chemical vapors and do not protect the sample from contamination.

What are HEPA filters and why are they important in BSCs?

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters remove 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. They are crucial in BSCs to prevent contamination by filtering out microorganisms and maintaining sterile conditions.

How often should a Biosafety Cabinet be certified?

Typically, BSCs are certified annually or after any significant maintenance, relocation, or filter replacement. Certification ensures that the cabinet is functioning correctly to protect both the user and the environment.

What are the steps for proper Biosafety Cabinet usage?

Basic steps include turning on the BSC 10–15 minutes before use, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, organizing materials to minimize movements, performing work from clean to dirty areas, and avoiding blocking airflow. After use, surfaces should be decontaminated.

What kind of decontamination is recommended for BSCs?

For routine cleaning, 70% ethanol or an equivalent disinfectant is recommended. For deeper decontamination, such as for servicing or moving, formaldehyde gas or vaporized hydrogen peroxide methods may be used.
